The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano will see the Tall Ships fleet take in the Channel and Iberian Peninsula in 2023. Following on from the Tall Ships Races 2023, the race series will visit Falmouth (15-18 August) and follow a course to A Coruna (24-27 August), Lisbon (31 August-3 September), and Cadiz (7-10 September).
The event will be the perfect opportunity to revisit old friends with Lisbon, Cádiz, and A Coruña, boasting a total of 22 Tall Ships Races and Regattas between them. As you might expect, they’re all eager to finally welcome the international fleet back to their shores. We’re also excited to welcome another long-standing friend of The Tall Ships Races as Falmouth joins as Host Port for Race One to A Coruña which will begin on 18 August.
The Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano series will celebrate the first circumnavigation of the world by Ferdinand Magellan and Sebastián Elcano over 500 years ago. The landmark expedition is one of the most important journeys undertaken in the history of maritime navigation and epitomises the unique and impactful experience of The Tall Ships Races.
The Race Committee has looked at options which deliver one short and one longer race leg and a scenic Cruise-in-Company along a charming coast. The race series will offer trainees an opportunity to participate in a variety of sail training experiences along with enticing options for international vessel operators to build a strong base for trainee recruitment.
The variety of festivities, attractions and crew activities during Europe’s largest, free, family festival, are sure to make the event a truly unforgettable experience.
The Tall Ships Races always provide the perfect opportunity to take part in some great sailing and embark on the adventure of a lifetime at sea. They bring together people of different nationalities, religions and cultures and visit a range of ports around Europe, promoting international friendship and understanding.
Falmouth will join Host Ports A Coruña, Lisbon and Cadiz in hosting the race series along the Iberian Peninsula. A long-term friend of Sail Training International’s Races and Regattas, the start port will once again welcome the Tall Ships fleet as they prepare for Race One south to A Coruña, Spain, on 18 August.
A CORUÑA, SPAIN
Located in northern Spain, A Coruña is a busy, bustling port. It’s located on a promontory in the entrance of an estuary in a large gulf on the Atlantic Ocean. It’s the richest region and economic engine of Galicia – an autonomous community in north-west Spain.
Spirited Lisbon welcomes the fleet of the Tall Ships Races for the eighth time in 2023 and will provide the perfect backdrop to the festivities.
As the oldest continuously inhabited city in southern Spain (and one of the oldest in south-west Europe), charming Cádiz boasts history, energy and enthusiasm.
As part of our efforts to continually ensure The Tall Ships Races are a sustainable event for Host Ports and the Tall Ships fleet, we will be trialling a ticketing scheme with Falmouth during the first stop of the series.
In order to access the event and join in the celebrations, visitors will need to purchase tickets during a designated timeslot between 14:00-18:00. Given the current challenges imposed by the cost-of-living crisis, ticket prices have been set at £5 for adults and £2.50 for under 16’s.

Cultural events like The Tall Ships Races provide a unique, long-lasting and meaningful impact for visitors wherever they go, and with the current pressures being placed on publicly funded events, we are determined to provide a flexible event model that will support The Tall Ships Races for many years to come.
Please note: This alternative funding model is only in use during the Falmouth stop of The Tall Ships Races Magellan-Elcano and will not be employed in A Coruna, Lisbon or Cadiz.
