Remembering Mike Rauworth
It is with great sadness that Sail Training International learned of the passing of Mike Rauworth on 6 December. As a long-time and active member of the sail training community, his loss will be greatly felt…
Mike joined the board of the American National Sail Training Organisation, Tall Ships America, in 2002 following a distinguished career at sea as a Commander in the United States Navy and master of several commercial vessels.
During his time with Tall Ships America, Mike served as Board Chair for 18 years and used his vast experience at sea and subsequent 30-year career as a maritime lawyer to help steer the organisation during a time of development and growth.
Reflecting on his impact on Tall Ships America and the wider sail training community, Sail Training International Chair, Jonathan Cheshire, paid tribute to Mike’s immeasurable contributions.
He was a big presence and will be much missed by all of us at Sail Training International. He was one of the most important people in the global sail training family and there will be seafarers everywhere who will mourn his loss.
He was a very active member of our International Council and contributed much wisdom to our discussions over the years.
Sail Training International Chair, Jonathan Cheshire OBE
Although the passing his is marked with sadness, Mike will be remembered with great joy and appreciation for his boundless generosity and commitment throughout the international sail training and Tall Ships communities.
The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Sail Training International go out to Mike’s family and friends at this difficult time.
