The start port of the Tall Ships Races 2018 has provided a warm welcome to the fleet over the last three days, with a programme of entertainment and activities that has delighted the thousands of spectators, crews and trainees.
“Sunderland has been a marvellous host port. We are particularly impressed by all the volunteers and their hard work. The event has been a perfect venue to inspire international friendship and understanding among the crews, which is the main focus for Sail Training International.
“The crews leave Sunderland with lots of good memories that will last a lifetime, well prepared for the race towards Esbjerg.“

Parade of Sail
As is customary, later today the Tall Ships Fleet will embark on a grand Parade of Sail out of the Port of Sunderland. In front of an audience of thousands of spectators, they will sail north along the English coast before heading east for the race start approximately five miles off of the coast.
The parade will be led by the Russian Tall Ship Mir and will commence at 15:00. She will be followed by Fryderyk Chopin (Poland), the dutch Class A tall ship Eendracht and the rest of the magnificent fleet. The parade will be completed by the Ni-Vanuatu Class B ship, Atyla.
ON TO Esbjerg
Following the completion of the Parade of Sail, the Tall Ships fleet will begin their race to the second Host Port of the Tall Ships Races 2018, Esbjerg.
Esbjerg is a bustling port city and the fifth largest city in Denmark. Located in the southwest of the country, on the west coast of the Jutland peninsular, the city has a thriving oil and gas industry. Esbjerg is also home to a population of over 70,000 people who are looking forward to welcoming the ships back to the port.
The Tall Ships will dock in Esbjerg for four days, during which there will be lots of activities for the crew, including a parade through the streets and a fantastic party in port. There will also be the opportunity for visitors to explore the ships whilst they are in port, as well as lots of entertainment and activities.
At the end of their stay in Esbjerg, the Tall Ships fleet will set sail on the Cruise-in-Company for five days with port stops along the way. This scenic voyage will take the fleet up towards Stavanger, Norway the starting port for Race Two. The Cruise-in-Company will offer the opportunity to learn more about sailing on a Tall Ship, take in some breathtaking scenery and visit interesting ports.

Participating in The Tall Ships Races 2018 is a fantastic experience that you can take part in too! There’s zero experience necessary and there are places are available on ships across the fleet on all race legs. There’s no need to wait – just do it!
