Trainees from 26 different nationalities have taken part in the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2016 from Blyth, UK to Gothenburg, Sweden. The countries they proudly represent include: Lithuania, UK, Turkey, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Netherlands, Sweden, USA, Sultanate of Oman, Ireland, Iceland, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, France, Estonia, Australia, and China.
One of the overarching goals of the Tall Ships Races and Regattas is to promote international friendship and understanding. At the Prize-Giving Ceremony yesterday (Sunday 4 September), Christian Radich (Norway) demonstrated their dedication to this by winning the prize for the ship with the greatest number of nationalities on board, with 10.
At the Prize-Giving Ceremony, worthy vessel winner Shtandardt (Russia) was presented with the most prestigious award of the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2016… the Friendship Trophy. This award recognises the vessel that contributed most to international understanding and friendship during the Regatta, as voted by the rest of the fleet. And it’s the second year Shtandardt has won this coveted trophy.

At Sail Training International, our mission is simple: “The development and education of young people through the sail training experience, regardless of nationality, culture, religion, gender, or social background.” Essentially, we want to help young people – in age and at heart – have an adventure under sail.
Earlier this summer, we launched our new website: www.sailonboard.com. With this exciting new platform, we plan to achieve our mission and get as many people involved in Tall Ships sail training as possible, while promoting international friendship and understanding.

On www.sailonboard.com we’ve got a great section that helps you Find Your Adventure. Simply decide what sort of adventure you’d like to have, when, and where… and we’ll do all the hard work for you. We’ll show you the vessels taking part in upcoming Races and Regattas during your chosen year and in your preferred country. Then the rest is up to you: contact a vessel to book your place and let the adventures begin…
Finishing events in the finishing port
Over the last few days Gothenburg has seen 80,000 visitors – all keen to visit the ships, mingle with the crews and enjoy the wide variety of live entertainment.
Last night (Sunday 4 September), the Race Village in Frihamnen, Gothenburg hosted the hugely successful Crew Party. Crew members and trainees enjoyed a paella buffet and plenty of lively entertainment, including a DJ and shanty and covers bands. Everyone got into the party spirit and took the opportunity to meet others from different ships, nationalities and backgrounds.
Tomorrow the fleet leaves the port for the grand Parade of Sail and leaves Gothenburg to sail off to new adventures.
