Sports Day in Lavrion

June 5, 2010

It is sports day in Lavrion with a number of the crews taking part in a series of sports arranged by the city. Unusually grey skies brought some rain to the area but the crews were unperturbed and insisted on playing on despite the occasional downpour.

Mir (Russia), Kaliakra (Bulgaria), Shabab Oman (Oman), Bodrum (Turkey) and Dewaruci (Indonesia) all sent teams to take part in a series of tournaments, including football, basketball, badminton, volleyball and tennis.

The strength and teamwork displayed by Mir was too much for Kaliakra in the basketball, while Shabab Oman seemed to have the upper hand over the Indonesian ship Dewaruci.  Meanwhile 16 individuals battled it out for the badminton trophy and 11 in the tennis. Competing in both the badminton and the tennis was Dewaruci’s commanding officer Lt Col Suharto (pictured).

The crews will continue playing tournaments until around 1400 local when a prizegiving will take place for the sports.

This evening at 2000 local the crews will gather in the centre of the town for a crew parade through the streets to the final prizegiving. It is hoped the rain will keep away long enough for that to take place in the dry.
