Lerwick is gearing up to host one of the biggest events in its history as final preprations are underway before the official opening of The Tall Ships Races 2011 – Lerwick, taking place from Thursday 21st – Sunday 24th July.

Early risers were treated to the picturesque arrival of Colombian military vessel, ARC Gloria, this morning, which has been a favourite with crowds in Waterford and Greenock and no doubt will soon be loved by Lerwick too.

Tomorrow at 12noon, crew on Gloria will perform a rifle display to start the event off with a bang ahead of the crew parade, official welcoming ceremony and crew party, all of which will add to the excitement currently building in anticipation of a fun-filled few days.

The Internaitonal crews will parade from 1600 through the streets of Lerwick to arrive at the main stage located at Holmsgarth for the official welcome by Knut Western, Event Chairman for The Tall Ships Races 2011, presented by Szczecin and organised by Sail Training International.

Captains and crews like winning prizes and those on offer tomorrow will include Best Crew in the Crew Parade in addition to inter-ship sports competition prizes including the overall winner of a tug of war donated by the Shetland Island Council.

Sail Training International will also provide prizes for the youngest trainee, oldest vessel and a few other additional surprises.

Vessels due in-port this evening include: Endorfina, Alba Endeavour, Moosk, Swan and Lord Nelson.
