It is great pleasure for Harlingen to be host port for The Tall Ships Races 2014. Especially because it will be the first time for Harlingen to be a host port in this international Race. The arrival of the majestic Tall Ships to the heart of Harlingen will, without doubt, be the most impressive event of the year of the Northern region of The Netherlands.
Harlingen is one of the oldest seaports in The Netherlands. Coming from the North Sea it is the gateway to northern Holland and homeport for sea-going trawlers and a large traditional sail charter fleet. Harlingen is a yachting centre. Two ancient tidal docks, the Noorderhaven and Zuiderhaven, surround the historic city center and lend Harlingen it’s unique character. Smaller Tall Ships can berth in the Noorderhaven, lined with historic warehouses and stately houses of ship owners.
On July 6, 2014 approximately 60 to 100 Tall Ships are departing the port of Harlingen. On board are at least 1,000 young people aged between 15 and 25 years (the trainees). They will make the journey of their lives and start with the first track of The Tall Ships Races 2014 from Harlingen to Fredrikstad (Norway).
They will learn to cooperate with people of all nationalities and will be able to share their knowledge. They will learn that you can use the wind to your advantage and that hardships make you stronger! It will inspires them to roll up their shirt sleeves. They learn to take orders from people who are older and more skilled than they are!
An extraordinary journey that ends in "An Ocean Of Experience’.
