Spectacular. If we should sum up what it will be like when The Tall Ships Races visit Esbjerg in 2014 in one word; spectacular would be it.
The majestic ships, a maritime celebration, an enthusiastic crowd, a friendly city and a great atmosphere are just some of the things you will experience when visiting Esbjerg in the beginning of August 2014. For the third time Esbjerg looks forward to welcoming The Tall Ships Races in 2014. In 1993 and 2001 the event certainly made its mark on the entire city, and The Tall Ships Races stand as the event not to be missed in 2014.
When you approach Esbjerg from the sea, you are greeted by a spectacular sight. The colossal sculpture "Man meets the Sea” – four impressive white figures – watch you from the shore. Inspired by the enigmatic Easter Islands sculptures, Esbjerg’s landmark can be seen from 10 kilometres away.
Today Esbjerg is Denmark’s undisputed energy metropolis. The port of Esbjerg is the service centre for offshore activities in Northern Europe. Within the last 20 years, oil and gas has been supplemented by wind energy and approx. 75% of Danish wind turbines are shipped via the port of Esbjerg. As a result, the port of Esbjerg has expanded its perimeter significantly and will continue to do so over the next couple of years.
Once the Tall Ships Races arrive at Esbjerg the whole port will be ready to greet the fleet. The berthing area will be at the heart of the harbour and within walking distance to the city of Esbjerg. A city that will be buzzing with energy from all the exciting activities planned to take place during the Tall Ships Races.
While in Esbjerg you should not deny yourself the opportunity to visit Ribe – only half an hour’s drive away. You will journey from our modern world to a beautifully preserved medieval town centre with old half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and a cathedral as the crucial centre point.
Nature too plays an important role for Esbjerg. In its backgarden lies the Wadden Sea National Park, soon to be included on Unesco’s World Heritage List.
There is plenty to see and do while visiting Esbjerg and the people of Esbjerg are eager to make sure your visit will be unforgettable.
